A Glimpse of Michelle Obama's Becoming
When
I was a sophomore in high school, Michelle Obama spoke as the Class of 2013’s
Commencement Speaker at my school. By that time, she was already one of the
most prominent figures in the world. And I was able to see her in the flesh
with my own eyes and hear not only her eloquence but inspiring words. Michelle
Obama is sincerely a role model to me and it is for this reason that I selected
to read her autobiography, Becoming. She
describes the book as a deeply experience since the book follows the experiences
that have shaped the outstanding woman that she is today such as her childhood in
South Side Chicago and motherhood. It also details her marriage with former
President of the United States, Barack Obama and her public health campaign as
First Lady. In addition to my interest in Intellectual Property, I am also interested
in government politics and working in the public sector. I also strive to
eventually make an impact in both my state and in the nation. Becoming goes in-depth of Michelle Obama’s
journey to becoming an influential leader and making a global impact. This is also
another motivation for selecting the memoir.
The
book just arrived in the mail for me yesterday, so I haven’t been able to truly
dive into it and get beyond the first twenty pages or so. My first impressions are
that it’s well-written thus far, has a personal touch, and truly begins at Obama’s
roots. It opens with a title page that reads “Becoming Me” and immediately
details her childhood. The book reads easy (so far) in the way that it’s a
pleasurable page turner and I’m also enjoying myself reading the book in her
voice and getting more of a sense of who she is. I extremely interested in
reading further because I do know a great deal about her now, and I know the
book contains additional information where I can learn even more about her. For
example, I am excited to see how she developed during her early adulthood years
since I am about to enter that stage of my life. I am looking forward to seeing
how her autobiography is organized and how her personal story develops.
