Are You Interested In Being A USC Student Ambassador!?

University of Southern California Student Ambassador

The USC Admission Center is the starting place for the University of Southern California’s visiting guests. Each year, our office welcomes over 100,000 guests and prospective students. Our student staff members are primarily responsible for giving tours to prospective students, families, academic groups, admitted students, and alumni, and assisting guests with the application process. To deliver a great experience to our visitors, the Admission Center’s Student Ambassadors work alongside USC admission counselors as representatives of the university and will answer questions about USC’s student life and college admissions.

Admission Center staff are paid student worker jobs at the university. Please note that we accept work study but do not require it.

What We Do?

Being a paid student staff member in the Admission Center begins with a 15-week training process, where you learn public speaking skills, facts about USC, and information about the admission process. As a fully-trained USC tour guide your main responsibilities are to:
  • Deliver 50-minute and 90-minute walking tours of campus to prospective students and their families, visiting alumni, VIPs, academic groups, and other guests of campus
  • Share your knowledge, passion, and why you chose USC with others
  • Interact with guests via phone and email to make tour reservations and answer questions about the university, student life, and admission process
  • Work in a professional yet friendly environment
  • Give admission presentations to school groups, providing information about how to get to college, its application process, and the importance of college all-together
  • Create personalized thank-you notes for your tour guests
  • Work with professional staff and Admission Counselors with tasks as needed

Here is an example of the average day-to-day as a USC Student Ambassador. Our students enter the office and sit down at a work station. Once seated, our staff will first turn on their phones and check our email inbox to see if any guests have reached out to inquire about a visit to campus or our application process. Our ambassadors will then work to complete the office tasks that help the Admission Center function (i.e. making coffee and completing guests’ campus tour registrations). In addition to office tasks, our student ambassadors will be assigned to deliver a walking campus tour to our visiting guests.

Time Commitment

Admission Center staff members are expected to:
  • Attend Wednesday weekly staff meetings from 5-6pm
  • Be available 1 week during either winter or spring break and twenty days during the summer, ten of which must be in June or July.
  • Be available to work a Friday shift during both the Fall or Spring semesters
  • Be available to work at least two three-hour shifts in the office each week

Note: New Admission Center staff members or our “New Hires” must successfully complete a 15-week training program that consist of Friday afternoon training sessions (2-5pm), shadow hours in the office, as well as passing a final exam. At the conclusion of training, we ask new members to commit to at least 6 hours of work each week.

Qualifications:

Working at the Admission Center is one of the best professional development opportunities you can have during their time at USC. To work in our office, we require a variety of valuable business skills to be successful within the role. While working in the Admission Center, we will further develop these skills to mastery. These qualities will benefit you not only during your time at USC but long after you leave as well.
Here’s a sample of those skills:
  • Public Speaking
  • Presentation

  4. Hi Clifton,

I think it was a great choice using the USC Student Ambassador position for your job memo. You clearly highlight what it takes for any of us to become a student ambassador and maybe someone from this class will apply for the position. In addition, I think it was very smart to explain the application process, so that anyone can apply for a position next year. Great job and keep repping SC!
